The Challenge

Mitigate risk for all involved whilst performing beam lifts.

The Solution

Metcalf Crane Services was selected to install 3 beams underneath the overhead wires during a rail occupation. The most critical beam (and the heaviest) was a 94t U-Trough with eight lift points.

Further adding to the complications, one of the lift points was directly underneath a 100-year-old overhead wire. Any damage to the wire would require the entire 1km section to be replaced.

Our engineering teamโ€™s rigging solution maintained a 600mm distance between the lift point and wire. The team then created an in-house animation check to ensure that the wire remained clear of any rigging and provide our client peace of mind.

The lift was performed successfully, and the overhead wire was preserved.
